A new driving force has been appointed to realise ambitions for a sustainable long-term future at BER.
July 2021 saw passenger numbers at Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport (BER) pass the one million mark for the first time last month. In fact, around 1.25 million passengers passed through BER that month, almost doubling June 2021’s figure.
The airport cites summer holidays less encumbered by travel restrictions caused by the Covid19 pandemic. With these relaxed in Germany, many airlines increased their capacity over recent months, while some took off from BER for the first time.
This milestone was preceded in May by the Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg (FBB) supervisory board promoting CFO Aletta von Massenbach to be its next chief executive officer, with effect from 1 October 2021. She succeeds Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, who departs the company at the end of September.
FBB says that the supervisory board “was convinced that, in her brief time as CFO, Aletta von Massenbach was able to demonstrate exemplary flair in the key areas of finance and can be trusted to aggressively tackle the pending issues of the airport company’s strategic realignment and to improve BER’s positioning within the German and European aviation market”.
Departing CEO Daldrup remarked that the decision to appoint von Massenbach “comes at just the right time”, adding that he was also “delighted that the first female CEO of a major German airport will finally be taking up this position in the capital region”.
Returning to July’s traffic figures, there were around 11,600 flight movements during the month, compared with only around 8,250 flights at Schönefeld and Tegel in July 2020 and the 25,700 flights that took place in July 2019.
